Coursework Instructions:

Early Childhood Education
Topic: Play, Language and Literacy Development in the Preschool Classroom
Due to the COVID-19 Pandemic, Early Childhood Programs throughout the country are navigating how to best meet the needs of the children and families in their programs. Some have closed their doors during recent Safer at Home and Quarantine Orders. Others have turned to virtual options of connecting with young children and families. There are a few sites that are remaining open and practicing social distancing protocols. Under these circumstances, it will be extremely difficult for you to obtain an observation site. Therefore, you will view the videos and write your observations based off the video and write a 3 page paper which based on the instructions that I will give you throughout this prompt below which also require to have 2 page of notes and a completed rating scale form a Microsoft word attachment. Therefore, your assignment in total will be a minimum of 6 pages.
Prompt:
Step #1: Before watching the four upcoming YouTube videos… you can choose to observe either Jasmin (little girl in the pink shirt) or Alyssandra (Little girl in the Purple long sleeve shirt) and focus on either Jasmin or Alyssandra to conduct your observation. In addition, as you watch the child you select also observe the classroom environment. Therefore, I suggest you watch the videos twice each. For example, the first time you watch the videos focus on the child you selected and replay the video and focus on the classroom environment.
The Child Observation Portion:
For the Child Observation: You will observe four different video of the child in the early childhood classroom. As you watch the video type some notes such as the ways the interactions between the child and the environment, as well as child to child in this case her classmate, and the child to teacher (if there was any) interactions supports language and literacy development in each of those areas. Since the videos are short you will provide a 1 page summary of notes labeled as Appendix A just make sure to put subheadings with the title of the video as you write the notes for each short video.
The Classroom Observation Portion:
For the Classroom Environment: You will observe the preschool environment from the video (describe what areas were available to the children as well as martials and activities).
You will utilize your Environmental Rating Scale that you created from the Microsoft Word Document titled “Environmental Rating Scale”. (utilize section: Informal use of language & Dramatic Play of your rating scale) and rate the classroom whether or not the environment supports language. Then write a 1 page summary of your findings of the classroom environment labeled as Appendix B.
Step #2: View and observe the YouTube video #1 titled “Jasmin and Alyssandra Stenciling” by Colorado Department of Education

Step #5: View and observe the YouTube video #4 titled Jasmin and Alyssandra and their Babies” by Colorado Department of Education
The link to the YouTube video #4 is below:
https://www(dot)youtube(dot)com/watch?v=JqaDAxavS5U&list=PLMHerO2200BuwICeVutHXMFgMMm-wFCFz&index=70
Step #6: Now that you have viewed the videos you can fill out the Microsoft Word Document attachment titled “Rating Scale: Assessing Environment to Inform Curriculum and include the table in this assignment by making sure to label it with a heading of Appendix C.
Step #7: Now it is time to write your paper.
You will write a three-page paper (not including appendix A, appendix B, and appendix C) discussing your findings from the child and environment observations. This is not a blow by blow but instead a demonstration of your knowledge and understanding with supportive research to demonstrate ability to make applications. Write your paper using APA 7 format with no less than three educational citations and three references.
Step #8: Below is how I want you write the three-page paper:
Start with an Introduction:
In your Introduction: Tell your thesis statement within the first two sentences. Tell us the basics about your observations (Summarize the observations in 2 paragraphs) and tell us the NAEYC standards you will address and introduce specifically your focus/Topic key ideas. Provide the names of the videos you used to do the observations and the time it took you to view the videos. Provide a brief snapshot of your overall impression of the videos, was it positive, was it a supportive environment? (Base off what you viewed) Was it lacking in activities and materials? (Based off what you viewed)
Step #9: Now write some Body paragraphs:
For example, introduce the topic and expand on the key ideas and how they relate to the observations. Develop and connect course concepts of language literacy in early childhood education to demonstrate ability to analyze the data and translate into practical classroom applications. You might want to research some educational articles of language literacy in early childhood education.
For example, here is one article you might want to consider:
Ferna, N. P., & Jiar, Y. K. (2017). The effect of print-rich media on learning language in kids. Journal of Humanities Insights, 1(01), 37-45.
http://www(dot)jhumanities(dot)net/article_59562_23da6d4ff6be27205568a5ad8ef8f652.pdf
Step #10: In another body paragraph integrate the NAEYC standards that were applied to the videos that you watched.
Here is the website where you can read through the NAEYC Standards:
https://www(dot)naeyc(dot)org/our-work/families/10-naeyc-program-standards
Step #11: Now, using the NAEYC Standards discuss the observations as it connects to NAEYC Standards such as Standard #2, Standard # 3, and Standard #9.
Step #12: Also, make sure to provide one NAEYC substandard/subset for each standard for standard #2, standard #3, and standard #9.
Step #13: Lastly, write a conclusion. In your conclusion: Discuss the significant findings from the videos you watched as you observed the child observation and observed the classroom environment observation and support citations and coordinating references in APA format. Include a reflection on what you learned with conclusions. Discuss the key findings. What did you learn or reaffirm from this assignment? You will want to use specific research from articles to support your thinking.

Assignment Guidelines:
• Should be a minimum of 6 full pages: Remember 3 pages must be for actual paper with an introduction, body paragraphs and a conclusion. Then the three other pages are what you are writing for your Appendix A, Appendix B, and Appendix C. Therefore you should have a minimum total of 6 pages.
• Must be in Times New Roman Font Size 12 with 1 inch Margins all around.
• Must be in APA 7 format
• Must have a minimum of at 5 sentences per paragraph.
• Must have a MINIMUM of 3 different citations and a minimum of 3 References in APA 7 format. For example, you can have the NAEYC standards as one of your sources, another can the YouTube videos but since they are from the same organization consider it as one. Then, another source can be educational articles that you might find. If you want you can have more than three different citations but just make sure to cite them properly in APA 7 format within your paper and in the reference page.
• Must have a reference page with at least 3 different sources.

Jasmin and Alyssandra Stenciling
In this video, the child, Jasmin demonstrates the ability to manipulate the materials within her environment as she can be seen taking part in stenciling. She also shows great communication skills through her interaction with her friend and classmate Alyssandra. They can be seen asking each other questions as they participate in their class activity. The interaction with the environment and her classmate supports Jasmin’s language and literacy development.
Jasmin and Alyssandra Playing
Here, the child shows a variety of skills as she plays with toys. There are dolls and a play phone that Jasmin plays with, with the latter one helping them to learn the alphabet. She demonstrates communication skills in her interaction with her classmate and the interaction generally supports language and literacy development.
Jasmin and Alyssandra in the Kitchen
This video also demonstrates the child’s ability to manipulate her environment as seen when Jasmin takes part in dramatic play with her friend Alyssandra. They use their imaginative skills in their play where Jasmin pretends to cook and serve food to her friend. She is able to use different kitchen items such as knives, plates and cups. Jasmin’s interaction with her classmate involves a lot of communication that supports language development.
Jasmin and Alyssandra and their Babies
This video involves a variety of play activities such as dramatic play where Jasmine covers her doll with a baby blanket and baby clothes. She is able to manipulate her environment well and uses her imaginative skills in the dramatic play. As the children play, Jasmin demonstrates her communication skills while interacting with her classmates and the teacher. She also shows literacy skills by writing down numbers and thus, her interactions support language and literacy development.
Appendix B
The preschool environment consisted of several areas and materials available for the children. For instance, there was the section where children were able to participate in stenciling. In this section, chairs and tables were available to make it easier for the children to sit and draw. Other children were learning from the floor where the teacher spreads numbers on the floor and the children are able to identify them. There are also some activities such as dramatic playing where children such as Jasmin and her friend Alyssandra can be seen playing with their dolls. They also play in the kitchen where various kitchen utensils are provided. The classroom environment also has materials such as charts, writing papers and pencils to enable the children to read, write and draw. There are also art materials and materials for painting. Based on the environmental Rating Scale, it is evident that the environment supports language. This is because in the video on Jasmin and Alyssandra and their Babies, we see the teacher taking part in individual conversations with the children. For example, when the teacher asks one child where she is going and what she will buy for the baby and the child goes ahead to respond. The teacher engages different ch...
