Research Paper Instructions
Introduction:
Choose a contemporary issue in global politics that is broadly related to the field of child and youth care, and write an analytical research paper employing one of the theoretical perspectives covered within this course to further investigate this issue. Each of the possible topics was briefly introduced within the course. The purpose of this paper is to allow you to further research a topic of interest; note that most of the information you present within this paper will be based on your own research on the topic. While the textbook provides a good starting point in most cases, the bulk of the information on the topic will come from own your research of journal articles, scholarly books, websites, etc. One of the main goals of this paper is to have you conduct your own research - An important skill at this upper level of undergraduate study. While you are required to make connections to theory, the overall goal of the paper is to provide the reader with an overview of your chosen topic and the world’s response. This is an individual paper.
Choose from one of the following topics introduced within this course:
• Child labour
• Child soldiers
• Disease – choose a specific disease i.e. HIV/AIDS
• Famine/drought
• Human trafficking
• Poverty
• Refugees
In all cases you should focus in on how your chosen topic affects children and youth specifically. If you have another topic in mind that you would prefer to research that is related to children and youth and the field of global politics, it is possible that you may write on this topic instead though you must receive the Instructor’s approval prior to Week 13.

Instructions:
Your paper must include the following sections as outlined below. In addition to the sections, information that should be included within each section is specified. The information presented in italics provides further explanation and in some cases examples.
1) Introduction
• Introduce the chosen topic. If for example if your chosen topic was child soldiers, you should explain what this term means. If upon consulting the available literature multiple definitions exist, you can acknowledge this here and explain what definition you choose to work with and why.
• State your main argument. Provide a road map to your reader, outlining the paper.
When stating your main argument, refer to the argument you make within the ‘my analysis’ section – Remember you are not writing a mystery novel so make it clear from the start what your position is.
2) Historical Context
• Describe what part of the world the issue occurs in. State if there are any countries that are most affected by the issue.If you wish you may choose to focus the rest of your paper on this region. If this is the case, you should explain your reason for doing so here. It is NOT necessary to focus in on a particular region. If you choose to do so then as the paper proceeds, focus your research on this region. For example, what is the history of the issue in this region?
• Describe the history of the issue.
For example, if your topic was child soldiers, how long have child soldiers been in use? Why are they used?
3) Theoretical Perspective• State which theoretical perspective you will employ to analyze the topic throughout this paper. Possible options include realism, liberalism, constructivism, or feminism.
• Describe this theoretical perspective. The required course textbook must be consulted and referenced.
• Explain the cause of the issue through your chosen theoretical lens.
While you may be lucky enough to find a source that explains the cause of your chosen topic through your chosen theoretical lens, it is likely that you will need to make these connections yourself based on your understanding of your chosen topic and your understanding of your chosen theoretical perspective. Consider researching your topic and writing the bulk of your paper, and then reflecting on the research and which theory makes the most sense to you to explain the cause of the issue (based on the research you have completed and the theory you are most comfortable with).
4) Canada’s History and Canadian Government's Response 
• Describe Canada's history with the issue.
For example, have child soldiers ever been used within Canada? When? For what reason? Are they still used?
• Describe how the Canadian Government has responded to the issue in the present (within Canada if applicable AND worldwide or in chosen region).What is Canada’s position on the issue? Here you may find it helpful to consult primary sources such as Canadian Government and/or UN websites/documents. Has Canada provided funds or other resources to address the issue? Has Canada placed restrictions on a country because of this issue?
5) The World’s Reaction
• Describe the role inter-governmental organizations (IGOs) have played in responding to the issue. For example, United Nations, etc. Based on your research of the IGOs involved, introduce the key players’ views on the issue.
• Describe the role non-governmental organizations (NGOs) have played in responding to the issue. For example, The Red Cross, Amnesty International, etc. Based on your research of the NGOs involved, introduce the key players’ views on the issue.
6) My Analysis
• Based on your research address the prospects for the issue being resolved, getting worse, or remaining as is.
• How do you think both Canada and the world community should respond?
• How does your chosen theoretical perspective inform your thoughts?
While these questions ask for your opinion, be sure to elaborate and explain your reasoning, referring back to your research to demonstrate that you are offering an informed response. 
7) Conclusion
Please use these headings to organize your paper. If needed the APA Manual provides a detailed overview of what information should be included in various sections of a paper i.e. the introduction and conclusion.
Note that your experience looking at a case study through a theoretical lens as practiced in the Case Study Analysis Assignment, in addition to any research you did for the Module 12 NGO Activity (depending on the NGO you chose) should help you in completing this paper.

You are expected to use at least 8 sources. Included in this count must be the required course textbook, and 3 scholarly journal articles. See Module 3 for links to related journals. Throughout the semester journal articles have been provided as supplementary reading; while you are welcome to use these articles, they may not be included in this count (of the 3 required journal articles), as a goal of this assignment is to have you conduct some of your own research.The other 4 sources may include:
• Any supplemental resources provided on Blackboard
• Additional journal articles
• Newspaper articles (see Module 1 for a list of major newspapers)
• Primary sources
• Such as government documents and the websites of international organizations
• Scholarly books
As you are only required to reference 8 sources in total, the scope of the paper is limited. You can be selective in choosing your sources, and doing so is likely to make writing the paper an easier task (less broad/more focused). For example, if you think x largely affects the issue at hand, you can seek out sources that specifically discuss x (whatever x may be). Or you can do some preliminary research, see what sources are the most helpful to you, and discard the less relevant sources. This means that though you are only required to reference 8 sources, you may in fact review more than this if needed. You may cite more than 8 sources if needed.
In accordance with BCYC Academic Program Guidelines, proper APA format should be followed. Your sources must be consistently cited throughout your paper, using in text citations. For example, if you state a fact you must cite the source of this information with an in text citation. In all cases include a page number. A final reference page should also be included. Please note that only sources cited with in text citations within your paper should be included on the final reference page. APA manuals are available from the Humber Library.
Length:
• A title page should be included that clearly states your name and chosen topic.
• Papers should be approximately 5 pages, double-spaced (excluding the title page and
reference page). If you go a little over 5 pages this is okay, but do not go over 7 pages.
• Use 12-point font, Times New Roman.
• Use 1 inch margins top and bottom and 1 or 1.25 inch margins for sides. 
BCYC Academic program guidelines apply. For instance, marks will be deducted for spelling/grammar mistakes and errors in APA formatting.
