A parent returning home from prison usually triggers a period of adjustments at home for both him/her and their child. According to Adalist-Estrin (2002), a child can be prepared to receive their parent after a long absence due to incarceration through communication and counseling. In this case, the adults surrounding the child, including the returning parent, should communicate the reason for their absence in a manner that the child can understand. Such an approach helps the child develop the meaning of their parent's absence healthily based on understanding instead of their prejudiced perceptions.
