Vignettes about Parent Incarceration

Coursework Instructions:

Early Childhood Education Class
Topic: Vignettes about Parent Incarceration
Prompt:
For this coursework assignment, you will watch two YouTube videos listed that relate to parental incarceration and in two pages you will describe what you learned by notating specific behaviors, commentary, or scenarios for each video.
Step #1: First, watch the following YouTube video titled “Joyce A Arditti on Parental Incarceration” uploaded by username Wecareaboutfamilies
The link to the YouTube video is located here at: https://www(dot)youtube(dot)com/watch?v=4BzmotbXLWU
Step #2: Next, watch the following YouTube video titled “What Happens to Long Incarcerated Inmates After Release?” by Arun Films Channel
The link to the YouTube video is located here at: https://www(dot)youtube(dot)com/watch?v=3SxzcgxTBTE
Step #3: Now, after viewing the two YouTube videos listed above now write a two-page observation of what you learned by notating specific behaviors, commentary such as what the speakers of the videos explain, or scenarios for each video. Make sure to discuss important things about parent incarceration from the videos that people should know. For instance, imagine yourself as a teacher where you come across a student who has a parent or both parents that incarcerated. Therefore, how would you help the student in the classroom and what resources could you offer. Since there are two videos to observe then consider writing one page per video therefore it should be two pages in total with at least three APA 7 format educational citations.

Incarceration separates families creating a vacuum hard to fill. The first video by Joyce Arditti has crucial takeaway points. It is heartbreaking when family members have to visit a person in prison, escalating the sores of having a family member in prison under twenty-four-hour control monitoring. Arditti's example about when she visits the prison about children visiting their incarcerated parents shows how desperate the situation (wecareaboutfamilies, 2012). Children are the greatest casualties of incarceration. They have to adapt to being raised by a single parent or sometimes by non-parents. These children will have to grow up without the child-parent love essential in children's proper and moral upbringing. It also deprives the children of a normal life. The families with an incarcerated parent are often poor, further making the children lack basic needs. They cannot go shopping with their parents like children from affluent families because the little they have is often spent on their unhealthy upbringing.
It is time the federal governments realize how destructive incarceration is to children and other non-incarcerated family members. If no step is taken, the situation will worsen, and the future society will be founded on different social ties that could be destructive. Cases of substance abuse and crime are likely to go up. Also, the children might grow into inhuman people who do not care for others in the manners that they should because of lack of primary care (Arditti, 2005). Arditti notes that social injustice plays a significant role in mass incarceration where the African Americans are the majority in prisons (wecareaboutfamilies, 2012). In such a case, children grow into a biased society believing that African Americans are criminals or discriminated against by the American judicial systems.
