My fourth-grade teacher stood over my desk. Her hair dangled softly over her shoulders. She then leaned forward and placed a book on my desk and proceeded to ask me to spell the word ‘fulfill.’ Compared to my classmates, I remember having difficulties when it came to spelling words and whenever I sought assistance from my fourth-grade teacher on how to spell a word, she instructed me to search it in the dictionary. Not only do I still automatically search a word when I have difficulties spelling it, but I also pick up the dictionary just to learn a few new ones.
My history teacher walks in, his arms are overflowing with books. He places his massive pile of books on the desk and proceeds to write the word “Democracy” on the whiteboard. He is neatly dressed in a sharply tailored tuxedo, paired with a cummerbund and a bowtie. We are learning about Democracy today. It is a topic we briefly covered in middle school but are going to delve deeper into today. We learn that democracy is a political system whereby the ruling power is vested not in one single individual, or in a particular class or classes, but in the members of a community as a whole. What an interesting lesson, we exist in a society where the people control the government.
In sixth grade, my social studies teacher happily informed me that I would be privileged with the opportunity of interviewing a representative from the Red Cross for a project. After receiving this news, my mind immediately reminded me of the shyness I struggled with. I was extremely shy that it took a week for me to gather the courage to call the representative. When I finally did, the lady was so pleasant and helpful. The interview ran smoothly and I could not have been more pleased with myself. I realized what I can achieve if I set shyness aside and reach out to someone.
