Well, the American Revolution, I think an excellent example for education is Princeton college, or what was then known as the College of New Jersey. Princeton was under the leadership of John weather Spoon, who had an enormous impact on the revolutionary generation and on American education in general. And at Princeton and in other schools at the time you see a movement towards education for national service or for community service. Previously, education oftentimes emphasized preparation of clergyman and there was an emphasis upon Christian training, theological training. Increasingly people were being trained for professions, did in medicine or law, or education or statecraft. And Princeton was a really good model of that shift. So movement from ecclesiastical preparation to civic preparation, whether student and Princeton are excellent examples of that. There's been a huge shift in the approach to whether spoon with the students and interesting character. He was raised in Scotland, did his education in Scotland, was a minister in Scotland and was leader of evangelicals in Scotland. During a time when the Church of Scotland was becoming more liberal in America, he served as a pastor as president of Princeton, the thing that he's most famous for. But he was also politically active in New Jersey in the continental congress and in the US Congress. And he was a signer of the Declaration of Independence. So he was famous as a patriot, but he also was very impactful in the area of education. It was knowledgeable about Scottish common sense philosophy. It became the foundation for most schools for much of American education in the 19th century. An older generation of scholars argue that whether spoon, because he knew the Enlightenment, had kind of abandon Christian ideals and was a convert to enlightenment principles. More recent scholarship says that this is not the case that whether spoon continued to be a dedicated Christian. But he was conversant with enlightenment principles who wanted to make sure that his students understood the world views that they were encountering, competing with or even appropriating if the principals were good and true principles. There was a shift on how historians see whether spoon and the recent scholarship has been excellent. Seeing him as a dedicated Christian, a dedicated churchmen, who was also a patriot, an educator. You know, one whether spoon was invited to come to Princeton to serve as president, he was not sure that he wanted to move to America. He initially declined. And then some folks representing Princeton urged him to reconsider. One was Benjamin Rush, an educator and a physician who was a Princeton alumnus, who pleaded with whether spoon to reconsider. In other words, an influential minister in New York, the name of John Rogers, who in a letter to whether spoon urged him to come saying that he would be invaluable service to the cause of the church, the cause of education, and the cause of Christian liberty. And I think those touch on areas whether spoons influence in the church. He helped organize the General Assembly of the Presbyterian Church. In education. He served for 30 years as president of Princeton, or almost 30 years his predecessors. I'll only served a few years and then they died at Princeton was for the earliest generation of President's almost a death trap. He provided continuity and along leadership at Princeton and also for Christian liberty as a patriot leader in the United States and in New Jersey. And finally Mrs. whether spoon was persuaded and he came and under his leadership, Princeton became a model for national service or community service, or preparing graduates to go into different fields. Medicine, politics, education, any number of things. And so there's the sense of service, how our graduates are prepared for service, both in the church and then in broader professions as well. And Liberty University, there's an emphasis on Training Champions for Christ to impact our world. Because liberty is committed not only to training pastors, if that's the area students have been called. But also to train people in other areas of service. As lawyers, as engineers, as educators in all different fields of service. Because we believe that the Lord has called us to impact our generation. Whether splines are really good example of that happening some 200, 125 years ago. Making sure that Princeton was serving the community and serving the nation for the glory of God.
