In this regard, families of the prisoner usually become unintended victims due to the various issues that arise after a person is arrested. For example, the court process usually involves paying a lot of fees to different departments in order ensure the inmate’s details are processed in the system to speed up the trial process. The Young Turks cite an example where the fees required are up to $ 16000, which is a lot of money for low-income families. Consequently, such families are forced to incur debts, which affects their financial stability.
Moreover, more money is required when the family member is incarcerated in order to facilitate visits and phone calls which are usually more expensive. Martin (2017) confirms such sentiments by highlighting that a family’s income usually reduces after one of the parents is incarcerated. Some families can experience a reduction of up to 22 percent, which is a significant amount for those in the low-income bracket. Moreover, the trend continues even after release, which indicates that the impact is long-term. Thus, parental incarceration is an issue that affects the economic stability of families.
