The growth of the criminal justice system in the United States has resulted in some shocking statistics on the number of people incarcerated in the recent past, with the African Americans being the most common victims of mass incarceration. In the 1980s, the number of people incarcerated stood at 500,000, and as of 2007, the number had grown tremendously to a figure that is over 2 million (Wakefield & Wildeman, 2018). Although mass incarceration seeks to address the dire issues of crimes in society, the action has caused more harm than anticipated to the persons imprisoned and the people around them. The most talked-about effect of mass incarceration has been the high number of minority groups being incarcerated and the crooked social justice system (Wakefield & Wildeman, 2018). The impact that mass incarcerated has had on the lives of kids left behind by the imprisoned is massive and should not be overlooked.
Prior studies have established that the incarceration of parents harms the mental development of the children associated with the convict. According to Arditti (2012), the unclear loss of a parent due to incarceration and trauma associated with inceration are the most apparent culprit to the poor mental health of children brought forth by incarcerated parents. A psychological study establishes that there is a strong emotional attachment between parents and children. To separate them detaches the child from the emotional attachment, sparking lots of unpleasant emotional reactions such as loneliness, anger, fear, depression, sleep problems, and even regression, all of which are detrimental to a child's mental development (Arditti 2012). The most common manifestation of mental health disorders in children with incarcerated parents are anxiety, depression, and Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) that tops the chart at a 72 percent prevalence rate (Morcy, 2016). The relationship between mass inceration of parents and the deteriorated mental health of children is evident; therefore, it is high time the debate shifts to how to salvage the dire situation.
Dealing with kids whose parents have been incarcerated can be very challenging and delicate. To help them cope with the dire situation of unclear loss of a parent, young kids deserve to know what transpired that led to the unclear loss...
