Coursework Instructions:

Topic: Early Head Start Infant/Toddler Project Rating Scale: Assessing Environment to Inform Curriculum
PROMPT INSTRUCTIONS:
Early Head Start Infant/Toddler Project Rating Scale: Assessing Environment to Inform Curriculum
It is important that the early childhood educator understand the foundational and theoretical nature of curriculum and learning environments for young children and how to use assessment to inform that curriculum.
The purpose of this assignment is to help you think of the classroom environment as a “teacher” for language and literacy and determine ways that the room itself can “teach” and “provide language and literacy possibilities and practice.”
In order to demonstrate this knowledge and understanding you will create an assessment tool/scale that helps examine the linguistic environment and print richness of a classroom.
You should think of this as the planned, intentional opportunities to listen, speak, read, and write in the classroom.
The Education Handout Rating scale should be organized around classroom learning centers listed below:
Group Time
Math/Number

Nature/Science

Dramatic Play
Sand/Water
Blocks
Art
Informal use of language
Now that you have an idea provide for 8 categories with a minimum of 3 examples in each. An Example is provided in the Microsoft Word Attachment titled Project Rating Scales Example.docx. In the example I listed three of the eight categories such as blocks, sand/water, dramatic play. Now, what you have to do have is add the other 5 categories and fill out the Education Handout Rating Scale table.
You do not have to use example I provided as you can create your own Education Handout Rating Scale for your make belief classroom or you can use any other Rating Scale that had the 8 categories that I mentioned previously.
Look and read through the ECERS PDF attachment to help you with this assignment.
Then, after you create your Education Handout rating scale you will write a one page evaluative summary that identifies: the print richness and opportunities to listen, speak, read, and write in the classroom and how this informs the curriculum.
