Watch the video by Miladies Gort (2019) “Bilingualism Matters: Myths and Facts about Early Bilingual Development”.

As you watch it, also note Gort’s video comparing with with the García & Kleifgen readings, and your own thoughts on bilingulism.

Step 4: Reflect and analyze your own bilingualism

In this Wiki, you will connect your own language learning trajectory with the session’s readings and the video. You will write a Wiki entry explaining whether you consider yourself bi-multilingual currently, or at any point in your life and why. Your argument needs to include evidence from your own life experience(s) as well as connections with one or more ideas from the readings/video. You will write at least 2-4 paragraphs.

Before you write your Wiki entry, consider these questions about the development of your language practices that can help you build your argument:

-          What language(s) did you learn first, second, third? Or did you start your life (or early life) in a bi-multilingual way?

-          What role did family, friends, and/or relationships played in your mono/bi/multi-lingual development trajectory?

-          In what ways educational experiences supported or hindered your bi-multilingual development?

-          What languages do you currently use? With whom? In which situations? In what ways (oral, written)?

-          AND, look at the notes you took when doing the readings and/or watching the video (Step 1 and 2 of this session) and identify connections that you can make in your Wiki entry.

I learned Spanish (native), followed by American English, then later French. Since I first noticed people speaking multiple languages as a child, I have been perplexed by the concept of multilingualism in a homogeneous environment. My siblings would frequently claim that they speak three languages but only have a working knowledge of one of them as if this were an issue (Wright & Baker, 2017). My late multilingualism has caused me to mirror why, on one side, beneficial remarks about multilingual individuals are prevalent, and on the other side, continuing to support multilingual children in a monolingualizing context is a challenging issue for children, family members, and teachers. I learned French by communicating with my mother's parents in France. I formed tight bonds with my grandmother, great-grandmother, and great-aunt, all of whom I communicate with French because they were monolingual (Bhattacharjee, 2012). I would occasionally ask my mother for a word in French because some English words would appear first at the start of my stay in France.
At the school level, exceptional multilingual institutions were distinguished by a tight perspective on multiple language strategies. At the institutions I studied, there is a 'multilingualism in teaching' strategy that aims to meet the diverse requirements of bilingual students in a flexible manner. Multiculturalism and multilingualism were plainly expressed in the policy papers of the institutions where I went (King & Fogle, 2006). Multilingualism was not only declared as an objective in school effectiveness, but education programs indicated that multilingualism is a valuable asset, implying that an enhancement philosophy was being adopted (García & Kleifgen, 2018). Language growth was not favored over educational or social growth, but rather harmonious progress in all three aspects as desired.
