Indigeneity and Decolonization
Indigeneity is related to indigenous, which refers to native or the originality of a person, species. It relates to people who occupied and lived in a region ahead of other groups in terms of settlements. On the other hand, decolonization refers to the undoing of colonialism, where colonialism is the process through which nations establish and maintain their domination of territories overseas. Europeans dominated colonization of the rest of the continents in the world. This process began in the 15th century when the Spanish and Portuguese started exploring America, Asia, the coast of Africa, India, and the Middle East. A process changed the world order. The indigenous people suffered so much in colonialists' hands whose intentions were self-benefits while living the native people to languish in dire suffering.
The settlers did all they could do to eliminative the native people to establish their territory in the new land. On the contrary, settler society wanted to be assimilated into the lives of the native people to be recognized as indigenous to enhance their rule. They pretended to help develop the infrastructure for the good of all. Yet, they intended to have adequate infrastructure for fetching and transporting resources to their motherland ("Decolonization and Nationalism Triumphant: Crash Course World History #40", 2012).
The colonialists rubbished and condemned the cultural and moral values of the native people. The film Embrace of the Serpent details how the indigenous people of the Amazon forest suffered in colonialists' hands. Their values were all wiped out with the mass killing of the people. Decolonization left these places with nothing to smile about. Karamakate was the sole survivor. He wanted to preserve his people's cultural ways, but there was none to pass this knowledge to. When he meets the foreigners, he is willing to teach them, hoping they will write somewhere so that future generations will know of the people in the Amazon. The colonialists had killed all his people. This shows how colonization and, subsequently, decolonization left the natives of the Amazon forest devastated. The plant the people believed was sacred, had powers was now very scarce, and Karamakate had to travel long distances with Theo and Evan to look for it (Prasche, 2016).
The native people are facing many challenges due to decolonization. Violence, diseases, and discrimination met the native people due to colonization, and almost helpless during colonialism.
