Chapter 8 of your textbook touches on the benefit of using statistics to support claims made in speeches. However, as the 19th-century British political leader Benjamin Disraeli once famously quipped, "There are three kinds of lies: lies, damned lies, and statistics." Disraeli was commenting on the ease with which statistics can be twisted to support almost any point of view. As you're probably aware, some of the most notorious cases of statistical manipulation can be found in advertising. Can you think of any examples (current or from the past) in which advertisements and commercials used statistics in a questionable fashion?
