Antimicrobial agents are usually classified based on the type of action (bacteriostatic or bactericidal), their chemical structures, their activity spectrum, their source of agents, or based on the function of the antimicrobial drugs (Ullah & Ali, 2017). The function of antimicrobial drugs refers to their mode of action, which is how they interfere with the functioning and processes of bacterial growth thus leading to their slowing down or inhibition (bacteriostatic), or the destruction of the bacteria (bactericidal). This paper briefly identifies the four major means through which antimicrobial agents function, and which of these four methods is the most bactericidal.
The four main methods by which antimicrobial agents function relate to interfering with the bacterial functions for growth and replication, which are; protein synthesis, cell wall synthesis, nucleic acid synthesis, and cell membrane function (Ullah & Ali, 2017).
