Mutated forms of viruses with altered surfaces pose a monitoring challenge for an individual’s memory cells. Mutations in viruses such as HIV, Dengue, and Influenza allow them to evade the host immune response. The host immunity will usually respond after a viral attack by generating new memory cells to recognize the mutated forms of the viruses. The memory cells ensure that an individual is protected from contracting an infection that they have previously recovered.
