The nucleus forms an important part of the cell, being the largest and most prominent hence playing a crucial role. It is considered the brain of the cell and enables the performance of its primary functions. The nucleus is responsible for controlling cell functions by producing mRNA, hence enabling the regulation of gene expression. Additionally, the nucleus is also responsible for the storage and transmission of DNA, allowing it to perform its role in cell division and reproduction (Simon, 2004). This is crucial for the maintenance of essential information and characteristics across different generations of cells. 2. In detail, explain what a chromosome is and how they distinguish or separates men from women. A chromosome is considered a storage section for DNA molecules that contains genetic material packaged in thread-like structures. Chromosomes are usually in pairs, with human beings having 23 of them, totaling to 46 chromosomes. However, while both males and females share 22 identical pairs of chromosomes, the 23rd pair contains the chromosomes responsible for an individual’s sex. Naturally, females have an XX combination of the 23rd chromosome, while males have an XY combination (Simon, 2004). Consequently, during the development phase, the presence of the Y chromosome is important due to its ability to override female development, which is a biologically default setting.
