There are key topics covered in the history review of Nunalleq. First, Nunalleq’s history is based on two houses built four hundred and five hundred years ago. These are the archeological sites where Ubik artifacts started being discovered. Archeological experts arrived from Scotland to help in excavating these artifacts and preserving them. Another crucial point contained in history is the type of Ubik's artifacts. Over sixty thousand artifacts of wooden masks, dolls, amber beads, basketry, and hunting tools were found during the excavation. In Nunalleq’s history, the importance of preserving their history, culture, and heritage is expressed. Ten years after excavating the artifacts, the community has learned much about their ancestors and historical practices. Another key point expressed is that artifacts must stay within the community. There is great concern from Grace Hill, the board president of Qanirtuuq Incorporated, about some of Nunalleq's artifacts taken to foreign countries and never returned.
Similarities and Differences with the Egyptian Book of the Dead
Ani's Egyptian Book of the Dead is significantly similar to Nunalleq’s history. In both cultures, there was a necessity to preserve. Although they did it differently, they shared the need for their works and practices to be preserved. Ani preserves his life in a papyrus scroll, seventy-eight feet long. In this scroll, Ani writes guides that will help him attain immortality.
Similarly, Nunalleq's residents preserved their works and achievements in carved form from five hundred years ago. Excavators and volunteers in Nunalleq have found wooden carved items that showed the lives and practices of Nunalleq’s old generations. Another similarity is that both cultures were thoughtful of their future generations. In Nunalleq’s culture, the people made wooden carvings as part of art and essential daily use tools.
