Ford Motor Company, popularly known as Ford, is an American multinational automobile company whose headquarters are in Dearborn, Michigan. The company has been in operation since 1903 when Henry Ford founded it. The firm is segmented into Automotive, Mobility, and Ford Credit. Prototype development, manufacturing, servicing/distribution of parts, accessories, and parts of Lincoln and Ford vehicles is a function of the automotive segment. The Mobility segment develops Ford's autonomous cars while Ford Credit deals with automobile related financing and leasing contracts ("Ford Motor Company F.N"). In the recent past, the firm has been on a mission to roll out several new strategic plans and strategic implementation actions. In this strategy case paper, we shall explore two of these strategies and what the firm is doing to accomplish them.
1 Ford's New Hybrid Work Model for Employees
Ford Motor Company Annual Report, 2019 shows that currently, the company has over 190,000 employees in more than 90 locations worldwide. Thirty thousand of the employees are white-collar workers in North America who have been working from home for a while now. At the same time, about 100,000 are factory workers whose jobs are place-dependent and need physical space and presence to carry out tasks (Ramos & Ravindran 2021). In March 2021, the iconic carmaker announced the upcoming implementation of a phased re-designed hybrid in-office and remote work model for its workforce (Kelly, 2021). The human resource-focused strategy, which is among the first in the automobile industry, is expected to bring versatility and adaptability to the workplace by retrofitting and re-designing the offices to suit future change needs. Through this model, the corporation plans to incorporate new designs in the workplace and enhance flexibility in working hours and emphasize the work-from-home formula with employees going to the office mainly for meetings or group projects.
David Dumbensky, the firm's real estate subsidiary CEO, said that the employees shall make arrangements with their managers on how to strike a balance between remote work and in-person work depending on the tasks to be performed at any specific time (Denham, 2021). The objective of these radical changes is to create employee-centric work schedules that best suit employees' needs. The decision to adopt this work model was arrived at after more than six months of monitoring employees as they worked remotely over the last year and placed a think-tank to figure out a strategy for the future of work.
The company carried out surveys with results showing that a vast majority of Ford's employees worldwide preferred a hybrid work model that balances remote work and in-person office appearance. Most employees reported increased productivity and happiness as they worked from home. According to Ramos & Ravindran (2021), the company intends to implement the new work policy from July 2021, when most workers are expected to return to the office after more than a year of working remotely.
