Case Study – Jack Welch: General Electric's Revolutionary
Understanding past best practices are essential to learning the concept of strategic management. It allows a leader to be able to have an insight into the previous difficulties and their successful resolution by renowned organizational business leaders and utilize them whenever they meet the same problem in life. In this paper, I would like to discuss the case study written by Bower and Dial, entitled Jack Welch: General Electric's Revolutionary and discuss the article relative to different principles studied in the chapter. Thus, the subsequent chapters would initially provide an overview of the life of Jack Welch and his achievements and, subsequently, look at the reasons for this success. All in all, I believe that by analyzing Welch's strategies for success, it could give us a better insight into the role of strategic management in the firm's success.
Business Ethics and Welch's Personal Values
Jack Welch was the CEO of one of the biggest and most sophisticated companies in the world. Due to the number of products and commodities that it offers, General Electric had different branches, subsidiaries, and international offices, which is very difficult to manage. Nevertheless, one of the things that made Welch thrive in the industry was his steadfast adherence to his principles and values. In one article written by Sherman in 1989, he personally stated that "at the center of Welch's business ethic are his mother's wholesome value" CITATION She89 \l 1033 (Sherman).
Accordingly, his personal values were manifested as he implemented several policies that would improve the employee's work-life balance. For example, Welch did not only motivated and encouraged his members personally but also made sure that he is reachable by any employee. This stems from his belief that being a good leader means being able to listen to the needs and desires of your team. Accordingly, he implemented this by establishing the routine for managers, also called as the Work-Out period. During this period, managers are expected to look at the different problems that the company faces and engage in a meaningful and critical discussion about its resolution. This made the gap between the CEO and his subordinates closer, which was necessary for innovation and strategic management.
