Pablo Picasso's painting, Les Demoiselles d'Avignon,
Pablo Picasso's painting, Les Demoiselles d'Avignon, 1907, shows five nude prostitutes. The figures in the painting do not seem to be conventionally female. The body shapes of the women in the painting appear to be disjointed. The figure on the left side of the painting depicts a South Asian or Egyptian style of dressing. The two ladies on either side of the painting are shown with an African -looking mask. The two adjacent figures depict a Spanish style. The painter, Pablo, is Spanish. The painting is displayed in a museum in New York. This work will focus on the relation between the painting and New York City.
When a person first sees the painting, the most noticeable thing is the racial representation of various women. The two women with African masks present the African race. Other women have been dressed in Asian, Egyptian, and Spanish styles. Therefore, this is an indication that New York City is a place that accommodates people from different races across the world. If someone walks across the cities of New York, they can easily notice that it has people from different areas of the work. Such is indicated by the people's skin color and mode of dressing. It is a city of freedom where people from different parts of the world are allowed to showcase their culture. The native residents of New York appreciate the foreigner's cultural practices. Such is depicted by people's ability to walk on the streets wearing attires that portray their culture. In certain parts of the world, such as some Islamic states, outsiders might be required to wear attire that matches the country's cultural practices. Therefore, this painting is an indication of New York's freedom and the welcoming nature of the residents.[Almog, Shulamit. "Les Demoiselles d'Avignon: Painting Prostitution, Delineating Law." Cardozo Arts & Ent. LJ 36 (2018): 63.]
The painting represents ladies in a brothel. It is clear that the ladies are in the business of prostitution. Therefore, it creates awareness of the presence of brothels in the city. It is also an indication that women from different parts of the world can participate in prostitution in the city. Currently, prostitution in New York City is illegal. These are laws that were established long after the painting was made. Therefore, the possibility is high that the painting was made to appreciate women who made a living through prostitution. Regardless of prostitution being illegal in New York, placing this art in one of the museums could be an indication that prostitution is happening in modern New York.
The painting was made during an era when migration to America was high. People moved to America in search of better education and employment opportunities. Unfortunately, none of the ladies knew that prostitution would become part of the jobs they came to seek. The painting only represents ladies from foreign countries. This could be an indication that the natives of New York had better employment opportunities than foreigners. Therefore, they would not have to engage in prostitution to make a living. Currently, every American seems to be chasing the ...
