Critical Analysis of Coaching Theory
In the Coaching Theory of Changes, coaching aims to increase a client's success. The overreaching purpose of the theory is to provide a positive environment coupled with quality content to ensure that students or clients pursue their strengths as part of the change. Critique of this theory is often in light of Positive Psychological principles and practices and their contribution to effective coaching besides other areas like Freud's Mindfulness and Reflection Theory. Thus, the current paper aims to provide critical analysis of the theory in light of these aspects and the evolution of coaching during the pandemic.
Positive Psychological Coaching Tools and Techniques
According to van Zyl et al. (2020), "Positive Psychological Coaching is a psychological approach that aims to facilitate wellbeing, goal achievement, and positive changes in various life domains." In this approach, an individual's signature strengths facilitate their personal growth and development. It is, therefore, also called, Strength-Based Coaching or Positive Coaching. This form of coaching has various tools and techniques that different coaches utilize. In their literature review of recent articles in Positive Coaching, Richter et al. (2021) provide self-administered planned activities, Strength-focused psychometric analysis, guided self-reflection, goal setting, strength utilization and development, and creation of a personal development plan (PDP).
Each of these techniques forms the basis of the Coaching Theory of Change. The PDP, for instance, highlights the subject's ideal vision and the necessary steps needed to attain it. Notably, it also highlights the available resources, developmental interventions, and accessible support systems (Parashar, 2022). The Strength-focused psychometric analysis brings into the discussion the issues of Freud's Mindfulness and 'Use of Self' in coaching. This aspect highlights the importance of senses, mindfulness, and awareness, which are fundamental tenets of Positive Coaching. Additionally, the principle of self-reflection calls for both the coach and client or student to each ponder on the coaching process and the desired outcome (Killion & Harrison 2017). Thus, self-reflection theory applies as part of Positive Coaching.
