Erickson’s Stages of Psychosocial Development

Case Study Instructions:

We began the study of human development by understanding that human development is more than just going from child to adult. Human development continues through the life-span, hence the term life-span development. Even though we look at human development across the life-span, there are still hallmarks or stages of human development that are considered distinct, especially in terms of psychosocial and physiological development.
Explain the main stages of human development and describe what you think may be the important hallmarks of each stage. Remember to utilize your course and relevant outside readings to support your assumptions also attach a chart supporting. Cite all sources.
This week we will define what psychology is and look at different therapy models and how we do research in psychology. There are many theorists that have added a lot to the field of psychology and how we do research. You will examine the developmental theories of Freud, Piaget and Erikson, to name a few. Most of the theories will have stages of development broken out by age range...it is helpful to compare and contrast them via a chart. Also, we will look at some theories that have controversy like Bandura. He developed a social learning theory but his experiment with Bobo the doll was considered to be ethically not completely proper. We will look at some of the historical research that created the need for the APA's ethical standards. Did you know there is a set of standards for both people and animals? The APA website, apa.org has the complete list of ethical standards as well as research you can examine as examples for the different modes we will cover this week.

The second stage entails a conflict between autonomy and shame or doubt. Here, the child learns to be independent, and the main hallmark is independence. The third stage is initiative vs. guilt. In this stage, the child learns to either take the initiative through play (Erskine, 2019). This stage makes a person who was denied play become guilty over self-initiated actions. The fourth stage is Industry vs. inferiority. Children develop a sense of pride in accomplishment. This stage's hallmark is praise, which makes a child feel competent, whereas those who are not praised become inferior. The fifth stage entails identity vs. confusion. Adolescent strives to know their identity. The hallmark is that those who know their identity remain independent while the others remain insecure. The sixth stage is intimacy vs. isolation.
