In the case presented above, it is clear that John’s conditions have been profoundly affected by the recent events that he has been through. However, from the initial reports provided by the patient, it could be seen that he has always been lacking in self-esteem due to his family’s history of dysfunction. Aside from this, the patient’s history and current hobbies suggest that he is highly introverted. He values and takes good care of his close group of friends and has always been thoughtful about them. However, the past events that he experienced (e.g., divorce) has made him afraid of the possibility that these individuals whom he values most, could also leave him just as his wife did. Nonetheless, it could also be seen that John has an INFP personality. This is because, despite his low self-esteem, constant self-critique, and thoughtfulness towards others, he seems to hide these feelings by withdrawing from the events that he loves doing most (Kirkby, 2017).
In line with John’s case, it would be best to use a Cognitive-behavioural therapy in order to break down the constant thought processes that put him at risk. As according to Beck (2011), CBT uses “Cognitive techniques are aimed at delineating and testing the patient's specific misconceptions and maladaptive assumptions.” Thus, the primary goals of this treatment should be (1) preventing or reducing the patients negative self-thoughts and (2) improving his own Social and emotional capacities. Consequently, the measures to determine whether these goals have been reached are the decreasing frequency of his negative thoughts (e.g., sense of worthlessness) and emotions and an increase in the number of times when he returns to his hobbies (e.g., tennis and going to the gym).
