Coal is a combustible black or brown sedimentary rock formed as coal seams and mainly comprising carbon with other elements and compounds in varying quantities. Examples of the elements contained in this mineral include mainly hydrogen, sulfur, oxygen, and nitrogen. In South Africa, coal mining is the second-largest mining sector after gold. The industry contributes to approximately 2.4 percent of the country’s gross domestic product (GDP). While the sector has created employment opportunities to the locals and helped build the economy, it also has had a negative impact on the environment. The huge mines left uncovered and the dangerous gases emitted are not only dangerous to the environment but also to all other living organisms. It is, therefore, important to explore green approaches that can preserve the environment and health of the miners and their families.
