The Solar Winds Hack and Law Enforcement
Technology has revolutionized the way people and organizations operate. These developments have resulted in more efficient and effective operations as organizations are able to reduce their production and other operational costs. Besides, these technologies have enabled organizations to share information with third parties quite easily. However, criminals are also taking advantage of these technologies to execute their criminal activities. These criminals are extremely savvy in their approach that it is quite difficult to detect them. In most cases, law enforcement agencies have had to rely on shared information to identify the culprit. The case of SolarWinds Hack provides an excellent example of the need to establish a collaborative network that will help companies and other target groups to avoid such incidents.
Analysis of the SolarWinds hack revealed the lack of a corporation among both the governmental and non-governmental agencies. The hackers introduced the malware into a system that was shared by different people and their organizations, even prompting the individuals to update their systems without suspecting any attacks. A closer relationship among the entities sharing a common system would have allowed the organizations to realize the presence of foreign codes and collaborate to identify the source of this malware. The fact that the systems hacked utilized the Single Sign-on Systems further shows that despite the fact that organizations may be sharing networks, there is little communication among them, and instead, each one opts to conduct their businesses independently.
The case also reveals the absolute trust that people, including law enforcement agencies, have developed towards information technology systems. Accordingly, the agencies assume that having a foolproof system guarantees absolute security that does not need constant monitoring. While an organization can have strict systems, its users may be exposed to threats that will eventually lead to security breaches. Hackers can target the devices that users of specific networks use, hack those devices, and access any system that the user has access to. Therefore, as Stanton (2021) noted, having Zero Trust is an effective approach towards managing IT and cyber security challenges. Having no absolute trust means constantly checking the systems for any infiltrations and constantly updating them to ensure that they remain impenetrable.
The SolarWinds breach showed that cyber-attacks do not disting...
