Moral Status
The Christian view of a person's nature is based on the perception that human beings are created in the image of God. Christianity asserts that because humans are created in God's image, they have intrinsic value and dignity (Grand Canyon, n.d.). The idea of intrinsic value and dignity does not depend on any external influence but rather. Despite how a person looks, they are valued and dignified by God. In such a case, even if the fetus is deformed, it is dignified and worthy of moral status. The Christian worldview adds that the essence of being created in God's image is not superior from one person to another (Kelly, 1994). Even if one is more intelligent or beautiful than others, they are not greater than others. All human beings are valuable and dignified in the eyes of God.
The Christian worldview is compatible with the theory of human properties. The theory of human properties indicates that all with distinctive human traits have a moral status (Grand Canyon, n.d.). For example, traits such as being born of human parents or having a human genetic code endow the person with moral status. The theory of sentience denotes that all beings with the ability to feel and perceive have a moral status (Grand Canyon, n.d.). For example, such beings possess consciousness such that they can feel pleasure or pain. Jessica has fears about her hopes for better socioeconomic stability and independence and holds the conviction that all life is sacred. The fact that she believes all life is sacred means that she believes the fetus has moral status. The fetus has consciousness and can feel pain or pleasure.
Dr. Wilson uses the theory of cognitive properties. The theory of cognitive properties claims that moral status is not dependent on any biological criteria but rather the cognitive properties that give humans their moral status (Grand Canyon, n.d.). Humans with cognitive processes, including reasoning, mem...
