Factors Related to Patient's Health
Based on the given case, there are significant socioeconomic, spiritual, lifestyle, and cultural factors that are evidently affecting the health and wellness of the patient.
The patient is already in his old age and is dependent on his daughter both physically and financially. The daughter, who is the primary caregiver of the patient, is having difficulties with the time and money that is involved with taking care of her father, along with single parenting her child. The income and employment status of the family are huge factors that affect the patient's health and his own perception of health, healthcare, and wellness.
The level of family and social support that the patient is getting is also a factor. The patient appears to have multiple bruising on his upper back and extremities, and also more than one incidence of fall in the last six months. This gives some insight into the supervision that the patient needs or the possible issues that the patient may be dealing with at home. The patient also suffered 25lbs of weight loss for the past year, and the patient's diet and mental health should also be given attention.
In addition to these, the patient also seems to be bothered about being a burden to his daughter. This is also a factor that influences his mental health negatively, as seen in the patient's chief complaint indicating that she does not want to be a burden to her daughter. The family role and societal expectations of Asian families also affect the health and living condition of the patient because filial piety is encouraged, so the parents really usually live with their children even when they are already older. Although it sounds like a good setting, there may be needs of the elderly that are not met.
Assessment Domains in Conducting a Comprehensive Nutritional Assessment
The domains that should be utilized when doing a comprehensive nutritional assessment are nutrition, health, environment, behavior, and mental state. These are all relevant to ensure that a holistic assessment will be done.
The patient's food intake, including its quality, should be assessed, especially because certain food products can give various vitamins. Also, food is one of the main sources of energy that will fuel the patient to function. The elderly patient already experienced an unhealthy weight loss rate, which might be influenced by his food intake and the nutritional value that he can source from his intake.
