Hiding company problems has devastating implications for organizational productivity and quality. Informal norms were established where employees utilized unethical practices that had short-term benefits with long-term repercussions on organizational reputation.
Question Two: Why Did GlaxoSmithKline Regard Eckard’s Attempts to Raise Attention to Substandard Practices as Problematic?
Eckard identified several violations in the cidra plant that expose patients to harm. She felt a moral responsibility to inform the executive team about the challenge; however, the organization’s representatives failed to make appropriate changes. Eckard resorted to whistleblowing to ensure that the unethical practices were addressed. The firm’s leaders imposed pressure on secrecy in operations to maximize profits, but the approach had significant repercussions. The company was fined heavily, an expense that could have been avoided had the senior executives prioritized changes to quality controls.
Question Three: To What Extent Did the Boy Scout Approach to Sexual Abuse Contribute To The Issue?
The Boy Scouts' attitude towards sexual abuse significantly influenced the problem. The group prioritized its reputation over child safety, opting to remain silent on paedophiles within the staff. Officials failed to report cases of abuse to police officers and resorted to internal resolutions. However, offenders were not penalized and could retain social positions in the community. The group did nothing to stop sexual abuse and did not have a plan to find potential abusers.
