In Exodus 3:1–4:31, the call of Moses, the interaction between God and Moses evolves as the conversation continues. First, make observations of the text (step one of exegesis). Then, do a Structural Analysis of this exchange—what do you discern through the content and structure? (hint: if you are struggling with the narrative observations or structural analysis, see the handout on the reference page)
Exegesis, Step 1: Observing Details
Repetition: What are the repetitive words, phrases, or ideas?
In the passage where God talks to Moses through the burning bush, the word “sent” is repeated several times. The phrase “The Lord” also appears multiple times as God tells Moses to tell the people of Israel that he is the Lord, their God.
Characters: List all of the characters present (primary, secondary, stock). Pay close attention to the interaction as well as perspectives of characters in the story?
Primary—Moses, God
Secondary— Israelites, Egyptians, Pharaoh
Stock— Jethro
Action: List all of the action words (verbs) associated with the primary character(s). Pay attention, who is acting and who is being acted upon? 
* Moses was keeping the flock
* He looked and saw the burning bush.
* And he turned aside to see it.
* And Moses hid his face
* God told Moses he had seen the illness of His people living in Egypt
* He heard their cry and knew their sufferings
* He says he has come to deliver the Israelites from Egypt and bring them to the Promised Land
* He has also seen the oppression. His people have experienced.
* He asks Moses to come, and he will send him to Pharaoh so that he may bring the people out of Egypt.
* Moses asks God who he is that he should go to Pharaoh and bring Israelites from Egypt
* God says He will be with him, and He has sent him
* God tells Moses that after he has brought the Israelites from Egypt, he will serve Him on the mountain
Setting: Where is this passage set? Include geographic location as well as time. Why does it matter? 
The passage is set in Egypt, where the children of Israel have been enslaved, and God wants to free them from the Egyptians through Moses.
Exegesis, Step 2: Structural Analysis, Outlining the Biblical Text
Outline the passage: (at least 2-3 major points with additional sub-points – use v. #s)
During this time, the Israelites were suffering under the hands of Egyptians, and God decided to help them through Moses, and so He talked to him through the burning bush (3:2).
* As Moses approached the burning bush, God asked him not to approach while wearing his sandals (3:5).
* Gods told Moses that he has seen the affliction of his people, and wanted to deliver them from Egypt through him (3:7-8)
