Step 1: Initial Observation of Literary Elements 
Repetition: What are the repetitive words, phrases, or ideas?
Amalek (17: 8, 17: 9, 17:10, 17:11, 17:14, 17:16). These were the enemies of the Israelites. The repetition is an emphasis on the important role they played in the Israelites journey out of Egypt. 
The Lord (17:14, 15:15, 17:16) this repetition emphasizes the might power that was guiding the Israelites through the wilderness.  
Joshua (17:9, 17:10, 17:14). Emphasizes on the help Joshua accorded to Moses.
Hand, hands (1711, 17:12). This shows the power of God presented through Moses’s hands.
Israel (17:8, 17:11). The tribe that Gid was acting upon.
Characters: List all of the characters present (primary, secondary, stock). Pay close attention to the interaction as well as perspectives of characters in the story.  
Moses (the primary character). He is the person guiding the Israelites through the wilderness and takes direct commands from God.
Amalek (secondary characters) were the enemies of the Israelites. 
Aaron, Hur, Joshua (stock characters) are minor characters who helped Moses in the fight against Amalek.
Action: List all of the action words (verbs) associated with the primary character(s). Pay attention, who is acting and who is being acted upon? 
Held up- This verb refers to when Moses would lift the staff of God during a fight, and the Israelites would prevail. 
Lowered- This verb refers to when Moses lowered the staff of God and the Amalek would prevail in the fight.
Built- This verb refers to the alter made by Moses, and therefore, the verb is acting on Moses. 
Fight, fought- the fight was used to show the Israelites about the power of God through Moses.
Setting: Where is this passage set? Include geographic location as well as time. Why does it matter? 
The passage is set in Rephidim, a dessert that made it challenging for the Israelites to get water. It is located between the wilderness of Sinai and the wilderness of sin. The passage is set during the period when the Israelites had left Egypt on their way to Canaan. The location matters a lot because it made the Israelites fight with Amalek to see Gods manifestation. During this time, God manifested his power through Moses, thus giving the people hope of being protected by a superior being. 
Genre: What is the genre or literary category? Some may include: poetry, law, genealogy, prayer, heroic narrative, prophetic story, call narrative, novella, battle/dream/epiphany report, anecdote, farewell speech, etc. 
The story is heroic because it manifests the power of God through Moses, and he made the Israelites defeat the Amalek.
