Summary of “Our Energy Challenge”
In “Our Energy Challenge” author Bill McKibben identifies energy as the main factor behind economic growth in the world. However, alternative sources of energy should be identified as excessive consumption of energy from coal negatively affects the environment.
Energy from coal fossils was first put into use in the 18th century. At this point, energy from sunlight and wind was replaced by a new slave who was supposed to make people rich (McKibben, 2009). Consequently, people started to use more energy in their daily activities than in the past. Therefore, as people attained higher living standards, the more energy was needed for consumption (McKibben, 2009).
Energy and the world’s economy have a reciprocal relationship. Consequently, chemical, electronic, and information sectors of the industrial revolution were purely powered by energy from coal (McKibben, 2009).
