The metamorphosis
Question One
Before the excerpt, different instances show the values and beliefs of the characters involved. When Gregor gets an injury that limits his mobility, the family shows pity when they leave the bedroom door open, which makes it possible for Gregor to watch the rest of the family. This indicates that the family believes that Gregor has some humanity. This incident makes the readers remember the kind of relationship that Gregor has had with the rest members of the family.
Additionally, when Gregor’s sister, Grete, starts to play the violin, everyone seems interested and wants to see her perform. At first, the three gentlemen are attentive and want Grete to play for them in the room. Everyone seems to be preoccupied with the violin, and this gives Gregor forced himself forward to the living room where he can see his sister (Kafka, p.1185). This incident is critical since it reminds the reader about the great pride Gregor, but his current situation has made him inconsiderate and unmindful. However, Gregor is captivated by the music than other gentlemen who started talking to each other in the middle of the performance, indicating that they had been disappointed and were not being entertained.
However, Gregor has an entirely different reaction to his sister’s performance and wishes that her sister would “come into his room with her violin” because she was not being appreciated (Kafka, p.1186). Gregor’s reaction reminds the reader about the affection he had for his sister. Besides, this shows that the bond between Gregor and his sister is still strong and that his former human is not fully separated from his family. The author uses music, which is a form of art as a source of hope because it reminds Gregor of what he had missed and how he planned to send her sister to the conservatory.
Question Two
These words were said by the author, Franz Kafka, who is explaining the circumstances that resulted in Gregor transforming into a gigantic insect. Before this quote, Gregor had woken up from an uneasy dream where, after waking up, Gregor found that he had been changed “into monstrous vermin” (Kafka, p.1156). After lifting his head, he discovered that his belly was divided into arched segments, and this caused problems to him since he would hardly sleep on his right side, which he had been used. This incident shows the disbelief that Gregor went through after finding out the changes that had occurred to his body. Additionally, it is clear that Gregor did not want to accept reality and thought he was dreaming. He believed that the lack of enough sleep was attributed to the nature of his job. Furthermore, the events before the excerpt also show how Gregor was concerned about his family; he explains that he has had the interest to quit his job. However, this has not been possible because he states that he needs money to pay his parents’ debt to him. Also, the bond between Gregor and his sister is also demonstrated when Grete became concerned about his brother and started asking him whether everything was okay and how she pleaded with him to open the door. The strong relationship between Gregor and Grete is demonstrated throughout the text.
