Donald Trump's ascendance to the US presidency changed the political debate both in America and the world. All odds stood against a Trump presidency when he vied against Hilary Clinton in 2016. Trump had amassed an image of technocrat that was not popular among Americans. Upon his ascendancy to the presidency, the political and economic debate in the US changed with more insights invested in understanding the changes in the nation's political trajectory. In his publication, The New Class War: Saving Democracy from the Managerial Elite, Michael Lind discusses how a traditionally dormant democratic faction has changed its tactics to revitalize the political trajectory both in the US and Europe. This review explores Lind's The New Class War with the specific emphasis on the changing political trajectory of the world and the validity of the author's theoretical framework. Understanding Lind's input creates new insight into the political and economic changes that the world endured towards the end of the last decade in Europe and the USA.
Lind (2020) begins the work with a chronological insight into the events that followed various political processes to mark his debate. Lind (2020) notes various events of 2016 that marked the onset of the new political debate. On June 23, 2016, Britain shocked the world when the majority of its citizens voted in favor of the nation's exit from the European Union (EU). On November 8, 2016, an even bigger surprise hit the world with Donald Trump declared the United States president. The two events, according to Lind (2020), were not just ordinary political occurrences. The author insists that the events set the new tone of politics in the European Union and the US. Since the two incidences, the entirety of Europe has witnessed a political change that was never expected. Lind (2020) notes that centrist political parties and politicians have lost the political ground to outsider parties and politicians. According to Lind (2020, p.8), "sometimes on the left, but more often on the populist and nationalist right." The extent to which the new political class changed the politics of the world would mark the book's most introductory chapters.
Different changes in European politics swayed Lind's theoretical analyses. The publication cites the rising to power of the Five Star Movement in Italy in the summer of 2018. The Five Star Movement was highly considered as a coalition of the right-wing populist League and the anti-establishment. The same changes would be showcased in Germany, where center-left social democrats imploded, thereby opening avenues for the success of the insurgent movements on the left and right. Lind (2020) notes that even nations that primarily seemed immune to changes in the new political trajectory revitalized their path. France stands among such nations that resisted initially. In 2017, Emmanuel Macron, a former investment banker and civil servant, defeated the populist candidate Marine Le Pen. The beginning of protests in November 2018 that marked a revolution against the rising fuel prices set the platform for a political change in France, according to Lind (2020). Other nations such as Spain and Sweden have sin...
