The Language of Architecture
Every structure or physical space that is built or altered is developed through concepts and ideas. In the Ted talk by Walter Hood, the speaker highlights the importance of concept and how it can be used in architecture to tackle issues and principles that should be present in the urban context. The concept creates a scheme by which physical space can be used to communicate not just ideas but also emotions.
The role of the concept in the design process is that it unifies a range of ideas and ultimately dictates the intent of the design. It allows the creators to address the method and material to set the development of the design in order to effectively move the people who witness it. The process of creation is guided by its concept and allows the artist to explore how people will perceive the intended message or theme of the design.
A concept is not just something that is instantly appropriated but rather a product of exploration of imagination and an analysis of ideas. The designing process should be guided by its concept through the challenging of the limits of intellect and consideration of history and the story behind people and physical spaces. Architecture has its own language, which allows physical spaces to conjure feelings and create a unique stimulus to the perceiver. A concept is a product of the convergence of different people’s imaginations and a collective intention to communicate a certain message through creative manipulation of space.
