Should Cars be banned from Cities in Favor of Public Transportation System to Reduce Global Warming?
In the modern world, a car is more than a possession that conveys an individual's sense of self and reflects on their aspirations. Over the years, technology has cheapened cars' prices, and many households today own at least one. Yet, automobiles have become a victim of their own successes. Increasingly, the impact of cars in cities is characterized by congested roads, long traffic jams, pollution, a rise of accidental deaths, and noise. No wonder 'ban cars' has become a slogan for modern urban dwellers. While banning cars comes with its unique set of problems, such as significant transport challenges, it would, nonetheless, create improved use of public spaces and help fight the war on climate change.
Notably, it is cheaper to use public transportation to get around than purchase a personal car. A person is saved from the stress of paying fuel, maintenance, parking, cleaning, and similar responsibilities that come with car ownership. Likewise, public transport is easy to attain, fast, and connects the urban and the rural areas (Perry, 2016). A city with organized public transportation provides both economic and health benefits to its community. Transit users are required to walk from one station to the other, contributing to healthier lifestyles, more productivity, and a happier disposition.
Again, embracing public transport is less taxing on the environment, unlike private vehicles. Thousands of cars in cities are a major pollution contributor because they emit quantum amounts of carbon monoxide, nitrogen oxides, noise, and other pollution. When these pollutants collect in the atmosphere, they contribute to global warming and climate change in the long run. Public transportation helps solve this problem by reducing carbon emissions per head (Litman, 2017). ...
