Buddhism is a non-theist religion, found by the sage Siddhartha Gautama in India in the 6th and 5th centuries. Researchers note that the founder of this religion was had been a Hindu prince. The Japanese adopted the religion as an ancient Japanese society through Korea and have followers from different societies worldwide. As the religion spread across Japan, many scholars became interested in its doctrines and their impact on society. According to some people, it was a form of religious experience that they could use to overcome their personal problems. On the contrary, others perceived it as the cultural history of medieval Japanese Buddhism that helped explain the Japanese cultural authenticity. Nonetheless, religion played an essential role in shaping the country’s political landscape. Consequently, several authors have studied how religion interacted and shaped the country’s politics.
Understanding the impact of Buddhism on a sensitive topic such as politics requires one to appreciate how much meaning religion has on its people. Shayne A.P. Dhal is a sociolinguistic Anthropology expert at the University of Toronto and lectures. The author provides insights into how the people perceived the Buddhist mummies as living creatures that could help solve their problems, such as transmitting telepathic messages and averting disaster.
