Shattered: Inside Hillary Clinton’s Doomed Campaign
The book of interest in this review is the Shattered: Inside Hillary Clinton’s Doomed Campaign, which is authored by Jonathan Allen and Amie Parnes. This is a book that can be classified under the genre of non-fiction. Published by Crown in the year 2017, the book has 464 pages and presents the content in one of the most interesting approaches giving the readers a rather pleasant experience. It documents one of the thorniest issues regarding the presidential election, in which Hillary Clinton lost to president Trump in 2016 (Allen & Parnes, 2017). In the book, Allen and Parnes go about trying to establish how a can’t-miss candidate, lost to a can’t-imagine candidate. This was a race that would have been easy to determine from the start until it was not and the most obvious candidate to win to the most obvious candidate to lose (Allen & Parnes, 2017). The book is very strong on the elaborate nature and the way that it brings out the weaknesses of the campaign, pointing out the lack of an overarching theme in Hillary’s camp. Largely, the book points to the fact that, the Clinton campaign is one that marred with failure from the fact it did not present a candidate that was accessible to the people. This is something that Trump was able to capitalize on as the authors point out. It is interesting to note that, the themes that are presented in the book from a personal point of view are solely true. The Trump campaigners had the ability to appeal to the people who for the longest time felt that they had been ignored, while Clinton continually assumed that they were popular and as such had a better chance at winning the race; but this would be a hefty mistake and one that would ridicule not just in American but even globally as well (Allen & Parnes, 2017).
The authors do not simply drop the premise of the book and failure of the campaign conducted by the Hillary’s team to the readers and mashup the content towards the end of the formidable defeat. Rather, the authors are keen to start off with the first signs of the campaign and the trends that in the end would see Clinton humiliated in front of billions of viewers across the globe. For example, the authors are keen on indicating some of the elements that plagued the image of Hilary as a candidate. This is common knowledge that her candidacy started off on a bad note, relative to the level of suspicions and conspiracies that came to the limelight months before the elections (Allen & Parnes, 2017). There is for example the size and reach of the money making activities as well as the dubious associations such as the famous Clinton Family Foundation and the spinoffs that would later come from the allegations. There were also unclear issues that surrounded her roles in Benghazi as well as in the Middle East while she was at the State Department. Later on, the issues surrounding the emails and the use of the servers would come to the light.
