China goes Global Name Institution China Goes Global China is the only country in the world that is opportunistic of the US’s retreat under President Trump. Since his election to office, President Trump has done all that is in his power to change the US and to reduce its grip on the world. A good example is the US’s withdrawal from the Trans-Pacific Trade Agreement as well as the Paris Climate Agreement. While Trump sees these as retrogressive for the US, China is taking important steps to ensure that the world knows that it is ready to step into the soft power vacuum. In her 2017 article, Nunez states that “China may soon fill the leadership vacuum that President Donald Trump leaves on the world stage as he is expected to sign a new executive order Tuesday that seeks to dismantle much of the work on climate change enacted by his predecessor”. The above is reminiscent of Trump’s post on his official twitter account where he said: “the concept of global warming was created by and for the Chinese in order to make U.S. manufacturing non-competitive.” Apparently, Trump does not seem to have withdrawn from this line of thinking as he still believes that climate change is not real. On the other hand, China has continued to make promises that it will continue to stand by its promise to honor the Paris Climate Agreement. In 2017, President Xi gave the world a flicker of hope when he was quoted saying, “all parties should work together to implement the Paris Agreement. China will continue to take steps to tackle climate change and fully honor its obligations”. The above statement is not only a political signal, but a sign that China feels ready to take up the world and expand its influence. However, there are those who are against a Chinese leadership and seem to worry about some issues that are associated with the country. For example, China has often been accused of turning a blind eye towards human rights issues in the country. Even though there are those who are not ready for a China leadership it seems more and more probable given the existence of the power vacuum. However, as it will be discussed below, there are still some issues which seem to be impeding China’s quest of assuming the position left by the US.[Nunez, Christina. “China Poised for Leadership on Climate Change After U.S. Reversal” last modified March 28, 2017. https://news.nationalgeographic.com/2017/03/china-takes-leadership-climate-change-trump-clean-power-plan-paris-agreement/] [Phillips, Tom. “China’s Xi Jinping says Paris Climate deal must not be allowed to fail” last modified Jan 19, 2017. /world/2017/jan/19/chinas-xi-jinping-says-world-must-implement-paris-climate-deal] Major impediments to China goes Global There are a number of factors that make it difficult for China to be considered or accepted as the reigning world’s superpower. Looking at all that China has done, especially in the last decade, it is quite clear that the country is positioning itself to be a major power and with the US already retreating, the time seems unsurprisingly right and nigh. Well, the latter could be true, but this section will highlight some of the issues in the way of China’s quest to replace the US on the global stage. One of the major issues tha...
