The book "Mini habits: Smaller habits, Bigger results" written by Stephen Guise is one of the most intriguing and inspiring books every student should possess. Though it faces criticism, especially from the corporate world, in the same measure it gets applause. The book dissects one of the issues that face every student and the non-students at large. Life presents everyone with new scenarios that will need learning to adapt and feel comfortable. The starting points pose a challenge, and it is at this stage that people feel inferior and discouraged as they try to force things to work the way they want. The mini habit idea shades light onto how to grow in any sphere of life (Guise, 2013). The book is important to students who face different educational topics to cover and multiple skills to acquire. One phrase from the book "when you add healthy habits into your life, it illuminates another possible path, restores your confidence, and gives you hope", substantiates the fact that every big thing had a small beginning that had challenges (Marinelli et al., 2004).
According to Stephen, a mini habit is a reduced form of behavior that someone wants to acquire. The habit is reduced to a point where the mental part of the brain does not resist. Guise got inspiration for Mini Habits when he succeeded with his one push-up activity. It is not a must to start with the lowest level of the habit. Some people will be comfortable when they start with one press-up a day will others will start with one (Guise, 2013). With time, the brains get accustomed to the action and allow the person to advance to the next level with ease. In this case, the habit will grow depending on the ever-growing emotional energy of an individual. It will be a matter of time that the mini habits spew into the range of bigger habits that motivation will not be needed.
Guise suggests that if someone depends on motivation to do a particular job, they will finally crumble down. This is contrary to the views of Cal Newport in his article Deep Work Review (Newport, 2010). Cal defines deep work as "professional activities performed in a state of distraction-free concentration that push your cognitive capabilities to their limit. These efforts create new value, improve your skill, and are hard to replicate". From the phrase, Cal advocates for and extra effort toward increasing the skills so that they are magnified.
Some of the important pieces of information in the book are the eight-step guide to mini habits. The author suggests that for someone to prevail, the practice has to be easy (Guise, 2013). The first step is to choose a mini habit and a plan one should not have one habit as it will be difficult to concentrate and the mini habits should not take more than ten minutes.
