The Swallows of Kabul
Yasmina Khadra is the pen name for Mohammed Mou-lessehoul, an Algerian author of ‘the swallows of Kabul’. Khadra was initially serving with the Algerian Army, and in avoiding military censorship adopted pseudonym of a woman (Khadra, 2005). The publications revealed the real author after he left the army going into seclusion and exile in France. The Swallows of the Kabul sheds light to the battles that Khadra left behind. He particularly focuses on the contemporary and fundamentalism Islam as acute, illustrating it in form of two couples who follow diverse paths in the name of gaining freedom, despite the cultural and political conditions influencing their fate. It is important to note that the suffering and Pain is part of life in war torn nations.
Research indicates that the book paints a cruel picture of life in the hands of Taliban in Afghanistan. It has been noted to display a French Film illustrative model in war ravaged regions. Khadra sets the voice of the novel clear in urgent matters to be discussed amidst challenging environment (Khadra, 2005). The couples are subjected to hopelessness with the religious rule that supports dictatorship. This is according to interpretations made by indigenous rulers who have mastered the Quran. Research indicates that women in Afghanistan lead a limited life, dismal and at the mercy of fellow men (Khadra, 2005). Women are considered offensive to the minds of men, and even cloaked from the public limelight, describing desolation and despair.
Two couples Atiq and Musarrat follow different paths in the search of freedom. Atiq is a jailer. Musarrat made a risk on her life to save the life of Atiq, her husband.
