Commentary
In philosophical writing, commentaries have long been an important way to explain a piece of text to readers, express original ideas inspired by that text, and give feedback to works in progress. It is an exercise in close reading and analysis. In this case, you’ll be writing a commentary on a section of Aristotle’s Politics. Ideally you should choose 1 (at most 2) of the numbered chapters to explore in depth.

Your commentary should have:
1. A short summary of the central argument: What point is Aristotle trying to make? Why is he trying to make it? Make sure to situate the chapter you choose within the larger structure of the book or work as a whole.

2. Detailed study of the text: Explain why you think is this passage important and what you think Aristotle is up to. What does the passage mean to you? Is it important because it is a good argument that convinces you? Or perhaps you’ve found a flaw in Aristotle’s logic that you think undermines the entire Politics. Why do you think he choose the particular words and ideas that he put into this passage? What are the implications of his ideas and words? Put yourself into this part of the commentary.

3. Conclusion: Briefly summarize your findings. Can you say something about the text now that wasn’t clear when you started? What is the importance of the section you chose for the chapter as a whole?

Requirements

• The paper must be uploaded to Canvas by 11:59 pm on September 15.

• The paper must be in Microsoft Word format. This makes it easy for me to check to see if you’ve followed the style guide and to make comments you can read.

• The paper will be between one and two pages. Do not go over two pages. 

• Style Guide:

o Margins should be 1" on left and 1" on top, bottom and right.

o Use a plain font (preferably Times New Roman) and set font size at 12. Do not add a title.  Never use graphics or photos and use bold and italics sparingly.

o Put “your name: Commentary” in a header.

o Use page numbers, I prefer them to be in the middle of the footer.

o Organize the commentary in three sections (Summary, Study, Conclusion), but don’t label them. You may use several paragraphs for the Study section if you feel it to be appropriate. Make sure the sections flow together and transition well.

o You’re only going to be citing one book, so simply put the page number in parentheses for citation purposes.

Short Summary
Book I's first and second chapters, dubbed "The natural basis of the city," focus on similarities between cities and human beings. Aristotle argues that cities are different because they have varying leaders. The argument establishes the context of asserting that differences between people create cities (Sachs, 2012). Based on Aristotle's point of view, people come together to complement their weaknesses and capitalize on their strengths. It is for this reason that the first chapter states that people build cities with good intentions. The intentions are good because human beings understand that there is strength in numbers in terms of negotiation, resources, psycho-emotional stability, among other virtues. Nevertheless, Aristotle also admits differences between people infer that hierarchies in cities are inevitable (Sachs, 2012). The inevitability derives from the fact that some people perceive themselves as masters and leaders, whereas others have the self-image of a follower. Correspondingly, the sustainability of cities depends on fairness or justice since those who depict a high degree of aggression and an inclination toward self-governing are highly likely to exploit and subjugate those who prefer to passivity and following others.

A justice system is pertinent in any form of community or association because a lack of fairness would cease the establishment.
