The book is about a young woman, Tracey Whitney, in her mid-20’s who goes from being an innocent person to a renowned con-artist. In the book, Tracey undergoes several evolutions from being a bank computer geek to a convicted felon and finally to a jewel thief. The book starts by Tracey receiving a call from her mother who has been driven into bankruptcy and is about to commit suicide. Tracey is unaware that that this is the last she would ever hear from her.
Tracey feels like everything is falling into place. She is about to marry the man she loves, Charles Stanhope III for whom she is pregnant. However, on one fateful morning, she receives a call that her mother has committed suicide. She decides to go after the mob that drove her mother to commit suicide only to be framed for murder and sent to jail for 15 years. While in jail, she miscarries because of lesbian rape. She gets pardoned by the governor for saving the daughter of prison warden who was about to drown.
Outside, Tracey decides to go after the people that wronged her and her mother. She takes revenge on the mob that framed her. However, because of her criminal past, she is unable to get work. She becomes a con artist and pulls off several heists while remaining anonymous. She often runs into a rival con artist, Jeff Stevens, with whom she develops a romantic relationship. Together, they pull off several robberies without being caught. One insurance investigator follows Tracey all through without being able to catch her. In the end, they get tired of the life as con artists and decide to pull off one last robbery and call it quits...
