Uncle Tom’s Cabin
Uncle Tom's cabin is a story about the slave trade. It incorporates the manner in which some of the slave traders believed in Christianity while others had a view that the blacks deserved to work in a cruel environment. Therefore, the novel outlines the impacts of Christianity on the slave trade by showing the relationship between the two.
Historically, religion was used as an excuse to justify the slave trade. During the colonial era, the colonists introduced religions such as Christianity to the Africans, hence making it easy for them to capture slaves. As seen from the novel, the Shelby family had a benevolent relationship with their slaves. This explains the reason as to why they found it hard to sell some of the slaves in an attempt to offset their debt. It is clear that not all the slave traders believed in Christianity. The religion played a substantial role in ensuring that the slave owners did not cruelly treat the slaves. "Now, John, I do not know anything about politics, but I can read my Bible; and there I see that I must feed the hungry, clothe the naked, and comfort the desolate; and that bible I mean to follow (Stowe 69).
To some extent, this statement was meant to show the manner in which the law did not follow the Christian ways of living. Mrs. Bird is urging his husband to change his view about the slavery law that was passed commanding citizens not to help any runaway slaves. Therefore, slavery was not always favored by religion because some of the slave owners believed in the laws of the land instead of Christianity. Near the end of the novel, uncle tom is killed because his disobeyed his bosses order about punishing his fellow slaves and failing to disclose about the escape of some of the slaves. His Christian faith could not let him do such a thing. Uncle Tom was certain that the actions of his new boss did not match the Christian teachings. Therefore, religion did not always favor slavery.
Religions such as Christianity often denounced the slave trade. Therefore, their religious beliefs played a substantial role in in the emancipation and abolition of slave trade. As a result, these beliefs motivated the Christian politicians into realizing the inhumanity that was involved in the slave trade. Hence, it led to the leaders abolishing it. In Uncle tome cabin, religion and the abolition of the slave trade is represented by the manner in which some of the characters start believing in God after Uncle Toms death. Religion is related to the emancipation of slaves in the fact that its teachings do not allow a person to be enslaved by another human being. Therefore, this relation led to the freeing of the people who were already trapped into slavery as well as the abolition of the trade to ensure that no more people were taken into slavery. The Shelby family believes that they treat their slaves in a Christian way hence explaining the reason as to why they were not for the idea of selling either of them. This is an indication that they understood the evil surrounding the slave trade and they feared that their slaves would end up in the hands of slave oppressors.
