To Chinua Achebe, stigmatization of the Igbo people, and other Africans was closely linked to slavery, colonization and imperial abuses of power. African perspectives and voices were largely ignored in western literature when talking about Africans “The enslavement and expatriation of Africans was a blessing, and not even a blessing in disguise, that a blessing that is clearly recognizable!” (Achebe 29-30). Western writers increasingly justified slavery from the 16th century that slaves were better off than living in their homelands. Africans were portrayed as subhuman by the western writers writing on the subject of slavery, but Achebe highlighted these misrepresentations, and the need to restore dignity through the African perspective.
