President Paul Biya: The Sole Guarantor of Peace

It is now clear Cameroon is suffering from a general instability due to book haram terrorist activities in the north and secessionist activities in the northwest and southwest region. I want this article to showcase every effort the biya government has undertaken to resolve the crisis. I would like this article to showcase that even with all the government's efforts, the anglophone armed secessionist is working hard to sabotage all the government is putting in place to resolve the crisis. e.g new roads projects programmed by the government to build in the southwest and northwest have been abandoned. due to secessionist activities of killings and kidnappings and no school policy, the south and northwest regions are economically weakened and all government efforts are sabotaged yet they still cause the government of doing nothing. The question this article should ask is why would you accuse the biya regime or the government for marginalizing your region and in response you only destroy every development that has been achieved and that is planned to be implemented? I want this article to conclude that if peace should come back, it can only be done if biya as the guarantor of peace in Cameroon is given the chance to fix this problem without foreign intervention as well as using the solutions of the grand national dialogue to cement efforts of peace and unity. Before the anglophone crisis, there were many demands and changes lawyers and teachers wanted from the government, most of all these demands and many policies and solutions have been granted by the biya government yet the crisis going on. therefore this article should showcase all biya;s achievements, efforts, policies and concessions and conclude that only by him being given a chance to resolve the crisis will the country realise peace. this work is a continuation of the work below. This time, we concentrate on the many government efforts so far and solutions to the crisis which can only happen if the biya regime is given the chance by all including the anglophone secessionists.
''The Guarantor of Peace and Unity in Cameroon
Influence over the political affairs of a country is a crucial aspect of a leader. It ensures that he/she has the power to make impactful changes that can transform their nation. For more than three years, Cameroon has been immersed in a secessionist civil war. The Anglophone part of the country has been attempting to break from the country's French-speaking majority and establish its state. According to Chung (2020), the Anglophone conflict has been a long-running problem, which has been responded to by the government through military force. Cameroon’s president can solve the problem using various strategies at his disposal, which makes him the sole guarantor of peace and unity in the state currently and in the future.
First, President Biya is also knowledgeable about the contributors of the conflict, which can enable him to make appropriate decisions to resolve it. For example, after the referendum of 1972, the then country’s president Ahmadou Ahidjo, was granted excessive political power by the constitution, which he used to establish a dictatorship (Song, 2015). During Ahmadou Ahidjo’s regime, the Anglophone regions of Cameroons lost their autonomy, and the country was the Republic of Cameroon. The move was opposed by pro-independence groups but the government ignored their complaints and continued with running the country using military force to subjugate those who resisted. President Biya is aware of such historical issues since they happened while he was in government. His knowledge of the problems can enable him to address them in a way that will be satisfactory to both groups thereby guaranteeing peace in Cameroon. Therefore, as a president who understands the problems affecting his citizens, Biya is the sole guarantor of peace and unity in the country.
Indeed, president Biya has made various concessions to address the issue, which highlights his desire for peace and unity in the country. For example, he has made major concessions on crucial topics such as language policy, education and legislative reform, and the representation of English speakers in government. In contrast, the demands of the separatist anglophone faction aim to achieve regional self-sufficiency and a solid commitment to both past injustices and perceived structural prejudice. While critics such as Chung (2020) argue that the concessions by the government are minor, they are aimed at ensuring a balance between the needs of the nation and those of the separatist movement. As such, Biya’s response to such issues shows a leader who is committed to ensuring peace and unity through negotiations.
Further, president Biya has the political influence in the country to make agreements that will help resolve the conflict. For example, President Biya has been involved in two constitutional amendments, in 1982 and 2008 that were difficult to implement. In both cases, the president changed the constitution to change term limits for the presidency. The recent amendment in 2008, involved removing presidential term limits, in order to continue his rule. The changes were difficult and required Biya to use his political influence to advocate for them. President Biya’s success in passing the amendments highlights his political prowess as well as influence, in the country. Consequently, he is the sole guarantor of peace and unity in Cameroon because he has the power to make political agreements that can help end the conflict.
Therefore, president Biya is the guarantor of peace and unity in Cameroon. He has been involved in government since the beginning of the civil war and therefore understands its causes and the approach to address it. Indeed, he has made various concessions based on the demands of the separatist movement, which shows his willingness to negotiate in order to ensure peace and unity in the country. Moreover, his influence over political affairs in the country will play a huge role in ensuring that both sides respect the terms of a negotiation. Thus, the president has been active in attempting to unite the country peacefully using his knowledge as well as negotiations.''
