“Taking My Parents to College” Analysis
The author's fundamental ethos is strong because she shows the audience how clueless a person can be in some situations such as her freshman experience. The author uses a pathetic appeal of the first day in school so that the audience can understand her reasons for letting the parents hang out for a few days. As well, logos are used by justifying her reasons for not knowing what to expect. For example, they arrived late. The article is a personal testimony. The fact that the author went through the registration process shows an appeal to authority. Appeal to the opposition is represented in her urge to quit school because she had hard times with English. An appeal to the emotions is shown by the author and her mother crying. The whole story is an anecdote because it shows the experience of a person who is not an English professor. Also, the article shows an appeal to the society because it talks about a matter that can affect any freshmen. The issue is not limited to one person. Therefore, through the incorporation of the above techniques and other writing features, Jennine Capo Cruset has been able to effectively present her ideas and persuading the audience to believe her story.
The author presents their argument about bringing their parents to school by using suspense. The main idea of having her parents in school while those of the other student had left should have been the initial argument in the first paragraph. However, she first justifies their reason for arriving late and not knowing what to expect. The topic of the article seems to be general, and therefore, without reading the article, it would be difficult to tell the argument of the writer. However, in the first paragraph, the author argues out that they were not aware of the amount of time that the parents were supposed to spend in the school due to lack of internet. Therefore, this prepares the mind of the reader by showing them that a drama might turn out because the author assumes that the rest of parents knows when to leave. The argument reaches a climax when the dean tells the parents that they are free to go. The author's family had just arrived and, hence, did not understand the meaning of this statement. This acts...
