The Man He Killed
In the poem The Man he killed, the poet uses simple words, rather than big ones, in order to attach simplicity to the hard subject of discussion. His poem is about killing, which is a tragedy in the contemporary world. The poet, however, uses simple words to illustrate the simplicity with which killing is perceived in the times of war. Being a soldier, the persona is used to kill and using weapons. The poem would be different if the persona used big words because he would sound emotional and full of thoughts. In the man he killed, the speaker is a person who is not careful and does not care about his own actions. For example, the speaker is stumbling when speaking. The setting of the poem is a war setting in which the author demonstrates the effects of a battle war. The reader is able to imagine the speaker sitting in a bar where the breeze was all he could feel. The feeling created by the effect of the war sees the use of diction.
