III. Plot:
The term Continuity can be applied on Mary Poppins because when Michael (Matthew Garber) and Jane (Karen Dotrice), the kids from the uptight and rich Bank family, face the prospects of a new nanny, they get surprised and excited with the arrival of magical Mary Poppins (Julie Andrews). The inciting incident of the play is when Mary and Bert (Dick Van Dyke), who is Cockney performer friend, embark on a series of adventures and attempt to pass on their nanny’s attitude to the preoccupied parents (Glynis Johns and David Tomlinson). The major conflict in the story of Mary Poppins is when Mr. Banks refuses to spend enough time with his two lovely children. Mary tries to convince him to spend more time with the family, but things do not go as planned and a fight between the two takes place. The climactic incident is when the father is unable to see anything but work. As a result, his children are left helpless, and the strict nanny treats them arrogantly, developing bad habits in them and impacting their lives to an extent.
The denouement of the play is that both Michael and Jane Banks are ignored by their parents. When Mary Poppins comes to them as a nanny and changes their lives, things change all of the sudden. The parents then recognize them and get to realize their mistake. The new nanny proves to be friendly and tries to fix the problem of the bad habits of the two children. Parents hire the nanny for full-time.
IIIa. The script of this play is wonderful in a way that it teaches us how important it is to spend quality time with our family especially children. These days, parents remain busy with their jobs and ignore children, considering that money is more important for the little ones than giving them sufficient time. However, there is nothing like this; children may not be able to say this, but they do want the time of their parents, not only their money or wealth. The nanny changes their lives, but she is not the substitute for the love of parents. The one strength of this script is that it allows us to understand that there should be a work-life balance in order to get success and peace of mind forever.
IV. Theme
The meaning of the play is that work-life balance is more important than working all the time and earning lots of money (Bluemel 11). Parents should always spend time with their children on a daily basis, and hiring a nanny can never be an alternative to t...
