Mary Changed the World
The musical play ‘’M ary Poppins’’ is a performance that comprises of dancing and acting. I watched the performance on You Tube on 13th January 2019 at noon ("Mary Poppins (Full Show)" N.p). The music was co-created by Cameron Mackintosh and it is based on the stories of ‘’The Walt Disney Film’’ and ‘’P.L. Travers.’’ Therefore, the work focuses a critical analysis of the play following the requirements of the textbook ‘’Theatre’’ by Robert Cohen.
Plot
The play follows a progressive plot where the setting of the play is introduced by the including the conflicting characters before reaching the climax and ultimately coming to a conclusion (Taylor 23). Actually, the most inciting incident of the play is the intentions of Mary Poppins which was all about money and not saving the children who got lost at the park while chasing a broken kite. Ideally, the main conflict in the play occurred when George’s children got lost at the park. George blames the Popping women for the departure of his children and even threatens to sack Mary. On the other hand, Mary claims that she took the Children to the Bank to see where their father works, hence, the issue brings a conflict in the play. Ostensibly, the climatic incident in the play occurs when the children of the rich uptight Bank family gets a new nanny with sunny attitude. As a result, the children tries to copy and even pass on some of the attitudes that they learned from their new nanny to their parents. Contrarily, despite the actions of George, the story ends by George mending the kite and taking his children to the park to fly the kite which means that the action of the nanny changed George’s attitude towards his children.
Theme
The lesson of the play is that people should not be rigid about their decisions but rather accept the advices of other persons. George did not love the attitudes of Mary and regarded them as destructive to his children’s lives. However, Mary stood by her decisions which ultimately helped George’s children and even George himself as seen in the final part of the play where George learned that he needs to take his children to play at the park.
Character, Described By Function
The main protagonist in the play is Mary Poppins who is seen to be a woman who always stand by her decisions. The decisions of Poppins are to the best interest of the children of George who is a renowned wealthy person. Actually, George is concerned about what his children learns from their new nanny who happens to be Poppins and he even threatens to sack her after observing a change in his children’s attitudes. Despite the threats, Poppins still maintained her attitudes because she was sure that they will benefit the children. The function of Poppins as a protagonist is to encourage people to be always strong and stand by the right decisions despite the adversities that may arise. However, despite showing characters of a good person in the play, George is still the main antagonist in the performance which is evident in the way in which he is jealous of Mary Poppins and always fights her.
