Critique for Musical Play "Come From Away"
The musical play Come from Away by Irene Sankoff and David Hein is a depiction of the aftermath of the 9/11 attacks that artistically describes the kindness of the people of Gander who accorded and treated stranded strangers with hospitality and kindness. The musical play Come from Away brings to life a remarkable true story of generosity and hospitability of the people of a small Canadian town towards almost 7,000 strangers depicted by twelve actors on stage. Irene Sankoff and David Hein produce a storyline encompassing the events of four days succeeding the 9/11 terrorist attacks portraying the significance of charitable acts of kindness and generosity and the change that was inevitable to all the people involved during the events without necessary downplaying the weight and consequences of the terrorist attack. The production of the play incorporates representational realism showcasing, for instance, Kevin J. (Kevin Jung) and Kevin T. (Kevin Tuerff) engaging in gay relations without attracting the attention of others indicating a typical reaction of people towards the gay partners. The two, Kevin Jung and Kevin Tuerff, are a gay couple in real life (Tuerff 2). The musical play Come from Away transforms the catastrophic disaster that left thousands dead into a moving story of hope and humanity in the actions of people moving the hearts of the audience and their eyes to tears.
The play captures the attention of the audience in totality with a moving storyline that is both entertaining and educational. Taking 45 minutes, the actors take the audience into a realm that depicts the actual happenings of the events in the aftermath of the September, 11 attacks in Gander depicting a dramatic historical genre. The play’s theme is portrayed entirely during the ‘play’ performance in the structure. Pre-play and post-play do not provide any theoretical presentation except for audience applauds. During the play, the twelve actors portray a structured sequence of identifiable elements from the beginning to the end of the play indicating the seamless prowess and expertise of the play’s director. The actors build different events indicating the sequence of the happenings of the four days, showing the interaction of the ‘plane people’ and the locals. The play’s structure does do not include an intermission that would re-energize both actors and the audience’s attention.
