The purpose of the study was to establish whether the type of problem causing an individual to call a gambling hotline varied depending on one’s ethnic group. The study also attempted to test the hypothesis that given the importance of family, relationship problems were the main factor Hispanic problem gamblers reported as the reason for calling the gambling help hotline. Yes, the research question is essential. Since gambling hotlines are now the gateway to gambling treatment, understanding how it affects the three different ethnic groups and their problems are paramount. Additionally, establishing whether relationships are a crucial push for Hispanic gamblers to ask for help will help develop familial-based strategies to help them deal with their problems and identify the family as an essential aspect in eliminating resistance to help.

The study’s independent variable is the ethnicity of the caller, established during the interview as White, Black or Hispanic, which accounts for 94% of the respondents. The dependent variables were the reasons for calling the hotlines, which they could identify from a selection of sixteen answers grouped into four categories: legal, financial, relationships, and others. The variables were clearly defined, with a clear rationale for each, and the relationship between them was well enumerated. The operations definitions correspond with the researcher’s need to establish the difference in the problems that affected the different ethnic groups and at what intensity.
